Santorini, Greece (2009)
SSantorini (Thira) is one of the most popular destinations in Greece. It is located in the Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades islands. This Greek island called Santorini was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world. The eruption occurred some 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization.
Popular theory holds that the Santorini eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis. That is something that has always fascinated me. Especially if you played the adventure game called ‘Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis‘ in the early 90’s.
We visited Santorini as part of a boat cruise day excursion. I think 95% of all visitors come from the cruise ships. It was a total nightmare getting on and off that small island with all the hordes of tourists. On the day we visited there was at least 5 huge cruise ships moored next to the island. Nonetheless, it was a fun excursion and hope to revisit the region again in a less rushed trip.
